An Aquilaria tree produces nothing worth burning until something goes wrong with it. Injure the wood: a broken branch, a fungal infection, and the tree floods the wound with dark resin to defend itself. Years later, that resin-soaked heartwood is agarwood. A healthy tree makes none of it.
The scent is warm and resinous, closer to wood than to smoke. Sweet underneath, slightly balsamic, with a faint bitterness at the edge that keeps it from turning heavy. It settles low in a room rather than filling it, and it lingers in fabric for hours after the stick is out.
Ours is made from agarwood powder and natural plant resin in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam.
A stick burns for about 25 - 30 minutes and holds a thin, steady line of smoke.
